Assignment #9: Jesse Anderson

Image
For this assignment, I wanted to try out the greyscale feature that lightroom offers. It was a cloudy day when I started shooting, and I felt like the effect perfectly complemented the overall mood of the collection. Rachel Grassick, a senior at the University of Maryland majoring in family science, packs up her stand from a full day at the farmer's market, which occurs every Wednesday near Tawes Hall on campus. She enjoys meeting with students throughout the day and sharing her passion for sustainable eating.  Chris Bollinger, a sophomore at the University of Maryland majoring in neurobiology, smiles as he leaves his friends for class. Bollinger always looks forward to organic chemistry, as he sees his future as a lab researcher manifesting when taking classes within the discipline.  Rachel Grassick, a senior at the University of Maryland majoring in family science, finishes packing up her van with the items she sells at the farmer's market in anticipation for a...

Assignment 8B - Arya Hodjat

This is my friend Ben Cooper. He's one of two sports editors of The Diamondback. (Arya Hodjat/JOUR370)  His co-sports editor, Andy, isn't here right now, unless you count in spirit. (Arya Hodjat/JOUR370)  While Maryland athletics aren't as great as they used to be, Ben is gonna help cover a men's basketball team that people have high hopes for. (Arya Hodjat/JOUR370) Ben doesn't report — his job is just to edit the stories that other reporters send in. (Arya Hodjat/JOUR370)  Here he is at his desk. He tells me he pretty much lives there, as he works every day. (Arya Hodjat/JOUR370)  Here he's pointing at the byline of one of his predecessors, Patrick Stevens, who now works for The Athletic. Ben himself has moonlighted at Pro Football Focus for a few years now. (Arya Hodjat/JOUR370).

Assignment #7: Jesse Anderson

Dalya Tamil has not always felt at home in STEM. She grew up with an affinity for mathematics, but was unsure of her abilities to excel in the field. Now, she proudly stands in front of her work for a particularly difficult partial fraction integration problem in anticipation for her exam in calculus II.  Dalya Tamil, a sophomore studying public health at the University of Maryland, was studying with some friends while working through this problem. She jumped in the air when she found the answer. Dalya Tamil smiles slightly, content with her work and proud of her ability to effectively complete the problem. She studied for hours the night before until she perfected the method.  Dalya Tamil feels at home in the mathematics department at the University of Maryland, and is excited by her future in math and biology.

Assignment 8b -Angela Roberts

Nora Eckert, an assistant news editor at The Diamondback, groans after the managing editor makes a gross joke. Even though Eckert and Arya Hodjat are both Kendrick Lamar devotees — and frequently can be heard batting lyrics back and forth — they also tease each other a whole lot. As Nora smiles gently at her editor-in-chief, her headphones hang on a lamp in the foreground. Nora is easily one of the kindest people I have ever met — always ready with a sweet word or a teasing joke to lift her friends' spirits. The sharp colors of the NPR sticker on Nora's water bottle stands out in the foreground as she slides her headphones on. Nora interned for NPR's investigations desk over the summer, where she delved into the effects climate change is cracking down on Baltimore City's most vulnerable. Nora scans over old newspapers The Diamondback compiles in books at the end of each year.

Assignment #8a: Jesse Anderson

The reconstruction of the Cole Field House on our campus is hard to miss. With noisy construction, looming CAT vehicles, and the hurried dialogue of the construction workers, it's become a defining part of our campus. I documented the contrast between our current Cole Field House and the construction of the new one through the following photos. The CAT vehicles are especially prominent with their vibrant yellow hue on the walkway to the STAMP building on the University of Maryland's campus. The current Cole Field House, which housed student involvement activities and a modified gymnasium, is expected to leave this campus by late next year.  The contrast between the two Cole Field Houses are clear. Cole Field House's signature brick architecture is reminiscent of the early days of the University of Maryland's campus, while the new version embraces more contemporary architectural features. A danger sign barring students from entry is plastered on the fe...

Hannah Butera Assignment #8: UMD In The Fall The gleaming fall season at The University of Maryland doesn't last long.  Students take full advantage by leaving the shortcuts behind and exploring the beauty of the campus. The (afternoon) light by (name of buildings) shows how vibrant the foliage becomes in the Maryland fall season. Students relax in the crisp fall weather at Tawes Plaza Garden.  ENO hammocks are a major trend amongst UMD students, especially this time of year. The mobile hammocks pictured above are easily attached to trees, providing students a relaxation break on-the-go.  Maryland's campus is not complete without its squirrels. A variety of squirrels can be found roaming around campus; you might even get cut off by one during a walk to class.  A memorial stone for the late Rhonda M. Williams, former Professor and Director of the African American Studies program at UMD, is surrounded by beautiful foliag...
